Abstract

This follow-up study of "Reminiscence: content, analysis and its nursing implication II" was carried out for the purpose of determining the constancy of the content of reminiscence over the period of one year, and the long term effect of
reminiscence on
the depression and self-esteem of the nursing home residents.
For reminiscence, individual interview was carried out for about 30 minutes by the same researcher and two research assistants as the first study of a year ago.
@ES The results of the study are as follows:
@EN 1) The common topics of reminiscence, the most often remembered life cycle, and persons were the same as a year ago.
2) In the aspect of affect, the number who showed "resignation" increased markedly(40%).
3) The degree of depression was significantly decreased compared to a year ago study. This might be related to increased number of the subjects who showed resignation.
4) The degree of self-esteem did not show significant changes.
Based on the above findings, further studies on the following topics are suggested.
1) The study on the concept of resignation and its relationship to depression.
2) The study on the different characteristics between those who want reminiscence and those who do not.
3) The study on when and why do elderly reminisce.
4) The difference between self-reminiscence and reminiscence to others.
5) The frequencies of the reminiscence of those who are near death.
6) Age difference in the purpose and types of reminiscence.
